What Adoption Looks Like Today

If adoption has crossed your mind, chances are the picture you have in mind isn’t the whole story. Adoption today offers more options and flexibility than it once did, and understanding how the process works can help you decide whether it’s something you’d like to explore.

Beyond the Common Assumptions

A lot of the ideas women have about adoption come from movies, old stories, or secondhand assumptions that haven’t kept up with reality. Today, adoption is a process a woman is part of shaping, often as a thoughtful decision about what she wants for her child’s future.

You Stay In Control

Modern adoption gives you an active role in the process. You can choose the adoptive family, decide what level of contact feels right for you, and shape the level of involvement you want after placement.

There are three main types of adoption, and the right one depends on your preferences and circumstances:

Open adoption allows for ongoing contact with the adoptive family, which may include visits, photos, calls, or letters, based on what everyone agrees to.

Semi-open adoption keeps communication in place through a third party, such as an agency or attorney, so you can stay connected without sharing direct contact information.

Closed adoption means no ongoing contact after placement and offers privacy moving forward. While it’s less common today, it remains an option if that is what feels right for you.

What Adoption May Cost You: Nothing Out of Pocket

Most expectant mothers do not pay for adoption services. In many cases, medical expenses not covered by insurance, legal fees, and other adoption-related costs are handled by the agency or adoption professionals involved in the plan.

Depending on the agency, additional support may also be available, such as counseling, transportation, maternity items, or temporary housing during pregnancy.
