Finding out you’re pregnant while you’re in school can bring up a lot of questions. Will you have to drop out? Can a teacher or coach treat you differently? Who’s allowed to find out, and who isn’t?

You Have More Rights Than You Might Think
If you attend a public school, Title IX protects you from being treated unfairly because you’re pregnant. Your school can’t kick you out, force you into a separate program, or stop you from participating in sports, clubs, or advanced classes simply because you’re pregnant.
Here’s what that looks like:
- Your school must excuse absences related to pregnancy, childbirth, or recovery.
- You have the opportunity to make up missed assignments, tests, and other coursework.
- You’re entitled to reasonable accommodations, such as extra bathroom breaks or different seating.
- You cannot be forced out of your regular classes or activities because you’re pregnant.
Your pregnancy and medical information should be treated with respect and privacy. If something doesn’t feel right, or if a teacher or counselor isn’t respecting these protections, your school’s Title IX coordinator can help address those concerns and explain your rights. Paris Pregnancy Care Center is also here to answer questions and help you navigate your next steps.
